How to turn off Meta Muse: permissions, apps and data

How to turn off Meta Muse depends on what you want to stop. Muse has no single off switch. It runs on a cloud computer rather than your phone, and Meta says background work keeps going after you close the app, so deleting the app doesn't stop it. What you can do is take back permissions, disconnect the apps it reaches, stop Meta training on your chats, and delete or reset what it holds. There is also a separate Instagram setting for Muse Image, Meta's image model. Every step below was checked against Meta's help pages on 26 October 2026.

Checked against the official pages listed at the end, 2026-10-26. Muse Task Hub is an independent guide, not Muse.

Which Muse you are turning off

Muse also shows up inside Meta's other apps. One Facebook user says Facebook sent them a message introducing Muse late on a Friday night, and asked whether deleting Facebook was the only way to get rid of it. An Instagram user asked on 26 October how to remove Muse ads, Muse search results and the Muse options shown when making a post. Nobody in either thread found a setting, and Meta's help pages don't describe one. If you searched for how to turn off Meta Muse on Facebook, the places Meta does document are Accounts Centre, where Muse's link to your Facebook and Instagram accounts is managed, and the Instagram reuse setting for Muse Image. Both are below.

  • Muse, the personal AI agent: launched in September 2026 in the Muse app and at muse.ai. It runs tasks for you through connected apps and websites. Most of this page is about it.
  • Muse Image: an image model Meta launched on 7 July 2026 in the Meta AI app, Instagram and WhatsApp. Its switch is an Instagram setting, covered in the last section.

Stop Muse acting without asking

This is the setting behind the best-known Muse mistake. A seller had picked an always-allow option, and Muse agreed a low price on their Marketplace listing and gave a buyer their home address. Our Meta Muse review has the sourced account. When Muse wants to act, it offers these choices:

  • Allow once: it goes ahead this one time.
  • Allow for this task: it can repeat this type of action until the task ends.
  • Allow for this site: it can do this on that website in future without asking.
  • Always allow: it can do this through that connector in future without asking.
  • Deny: it doesn't go ahead this time.

Where to take back Always allow

Open Settings, then Permissions. Under Connectors you set permissions for each connected app, and under Allowed websites you can see which sites Muse may use and revoke them. Meta's page doesn't describe a list of past Always allow answers, so go through each connector and set anything that can spend money, send messages or share personal details back to asking first. Muse can undo some actions if you ask it in chat. Others, such as a sent email, can't be undone.

Disconnect the apps Muse can reach

Disconnecting stops new data flowing in. It doesn't remove what Muse already used: Meta says that information may stay in its memory and your chat history. Ask Muse to forget it, or use the deletion steps below.

  • Open Settings, then Connectors, and disconnect any app you no longer want Muse to use. Meta says you can do this at any time.
  • If you want to keep a connector, many can be set so Muse can only read data. It then can't act, for example by sending a calendar invite.
  • Facebook, Instagram and Threads accounts are managed in Accounts Centre, not in Muse. Remove Muse's access there to cut it off from those accounts.
  • Device connectors such as Apple Health or Android SMS are switched off in your phone's own settings.
  • For Google, a moderator of r/MuseAgent suggests also removing Muse from your Google account's third-party access page, because disconnecting inside Muse may leave Google's own grant in place. Meta's page doesn't say either way, so doing both is the safe option.

If Muse signed you up by accident

Tapping the Muse logo in Instagram can create a Muse account without you meaning to. One user says this put Muse in the connected tools list in their Accounts Centre. They ran Reset Muse, but the entry stayed. When they asked to delete it, they had to create a password first, and the emails that followed said their "Meta" account was scheduled for deletion. They then worried that Instagram and Facebook would go with it. A second user says they hadn't disconnected Muse because the warning said it would delete their Meta account. Neither thread got an answer.

What we can say: Meta's Muse help page says deleting your Meta account deletes Muse along with everything else tied to it. It doesn't say what happens to Facebook or Instagram profiles that sit beside it in Accounts Centre. A 2024 Techlicious guide, written before Muse, says a Meta account is separate from your Facebook, Instagram and Threads accounts, which each have to be deleted on their own, and that you can cancel a deletion within 30 days by logging back in. Before you confirm, read which profiles the deletion screen lists, and keep the new password, since you need it to cancel.

Stop Meta training on your chats

Open Settings, then Data controls, and switch off Help improve our AI models. Meta says this setting is on when you first use Muse and that changing it also applies to your past conversations. Meta's privacy page also says your Muse conversations aren't shared with its ad systems. For the rest of Meta Muse privacy, including what was reported in its first month, see the review and problems pages.

Delete what Muse knows, or reset it

Meta is open about the limits. It says Muse may still remember what it learned from something you deleted, removes information "to the best of its ability", and keeps backups. It doesn't say how long those backups last. Signing out or deleting the app also doesn't cancel a paid plan; see Meta Muse pricing for how to cancel.

  • Messages: tap and hold a message, choose Delete, then confirm.
  • Side chats: in the Chats tab, open the side chat, tap the three-dot menu, choose Delete, then confirm.
  • Files: open the Library tab and delete the file. System files are under Library, then System files.
  • Memory: tap the Assistant icon, then Identity, then Memory. You can also ask Muse in chat to forget a topic or set of interactions.
  • Keep a copy first: under Data controls, tap Download your Muse data.
  • Reset Muse: in Settings, then Data controls, tap Reset Muse, follow the steps and tap Reset. Meta says this permanently deletes all your Muse information, including chats, files and active tasks, and can't be undone.
  • Delete your Meta account in Accounts Centre only if you want to leave Meta entirely. It deletes Muse along with everything else tied to that account.

Muse Image and your Instagram photos

When Muse Image launched in July, anyone could @-mention a public Instagram account to generate images from its posts, and public accounts were included by default. Meta pulled that part on 10 July, saying "this feature missed the mark, so it's no longer available." The reuse setting it relied on is still there. To switch it off, open Instagram's settings, go to Sharing and reuse, and turn off Posts and Reels under Allow people to create with and reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta. Press reports say this only stops new uses and doesn't remove images already made, and that private accounts aren't used at all.

Questions about turning Muse off

Is there one switch to turn off Meta Muse?

No. Meta's help pages describe separate controls: Permissions for what Muse may do without asking, Connectors for which apps it can reach, Data controls for training and resetting, and Accounts Centre for your Meta account.

Does deleting the Muse app stop it?

Not reliably. Muse runs on a cloud virtual machine, and Meta says background work continues after you close the app. Disconnect connectors or reset Muse instead. Deleting the app also doesn't cancel a subscription.

How do I undo an Always allow?

Open Settings, then Permissions. Change the permission for each connector under Connectors, and revoke websites under Allowed websites.

How do I turn off Meta Muse on Facebook?

Neither Meta's help pages nor the users asking on Reddit have found a Muse switch inside Facebook. Muse's access to your Facebook, Instagram and Threads accounts is managed in Accounts Centre. For Muse Image, the control is Instagram's Sharing and reuse setting.

Does Reset Muse delete everything?

Meta says it permanently deletes all your Muse information, including chats, files and active tasks, and can't be undone. It also says Muse keeps backups and may still remember things it learned from deleted content.

Will deleting Muse delete my Instagram or Facebook?

Meta's Muse pages don't say. Meta says deleting your Meta account deletes Muse. A 2024 guide written before Muse says Facebook, Instagram and Threads are separate accounts deleted on their own. Check which profiles the deletion screen lists before confirming; you can cancel within 30 days by logging back in.
